Salamat Central Asia also hopes to help provide sports
opportunities for the youth of Kazakhstan.
It is well documented that sports give youth an alternative from drugs,
sex, and violence. Girls, who
participate in sports, receive higher grades academically, are 92% less likely
to get involved in drugs and 80% less likely to become pregnant in their teenage
years. These problems have taken
many children down a destructive path.
Sports can change people’s lives for the better in various ways, such
as reducing stress levels, boosting energy levels, developing sportsmanship
qualities, increasing productivity, teaching respect, and creating a more
healthy quality of life.
Salamat has provided experienced coaches for a local club
basketball team. They have also
provided basketballs and other equipment to assist with their training program.
In the summer of 2003, Salamat hosted a sports camp in Almaty,
Kazakhstan for youth that included training in basketball and baseball.
The International Sports Federation of Atlanta, Georgia sent
representatives to come help facilitate the sports camp. Afterwards, Salamat
was able to donate the extra basketballs and volleyballs to the school where the
sports camp was conducted.
The opportunities for youth to be involved in organized sports have
diminished over the past twelve years in Kazakhstan.
Salamat Central Asia would like to be a part of reviving league
sports by partnering with local schools and gymnasiums.
Salamat plans to provide resources (i.e. coaches, materials,
equipment, camps, clinics, demonstrations, etc.) to enhance the training process
for various sports such as boxing, wrestling, football, basketball, and volleyball.
If an alternative lifestyle is offered to youth NOW, then perhaps they
will live a more healthy and productive life.
In turn, making Kazakhstan and the world a better place to live and work.
