Medical

Salamat Central Asia has been involved in medical aid and development in Kazakhstan since 2001. The fund has distributed hundreds of pounds of medical instruments and supplies to the most rural areas of the country. More than eight hospitals and polyclinics have received these much-needed supplies. Hundreds of lives have been positively impacted by this distribution. Salamat has also produced numerous informational brochures to help educate the population of Kazakhstan in general hygiene and health preservation practices.

The demand for basic medical supplies and equipment is constant. Currently, Salamat's staff is trying to locate more sophisticated equipment to update the under funded and under supplied system. Most of the current equipment being used in the rural villages is more than twenty years old. Much of that equipment doesn't work or is in dire need of major repairs. EKG, X-ray and Sonogram machines are three great needs. The greatest basic supply needs are wheelchairs, plaster for casting, and suture materials.

The Minister of Health has recognized the need for improvement in the medical system, and has asked a number of organizations to be involved in the modernization process. A doctorate program, based on Western standards, has been started in the city of Semipalatinsk and a new training clinic is being established in Almaty. Graduates of the doctorate program and professional volunteers from America and Europe will staff this clinic. Both of these programs will be completely conducted in English. Therefore, Salamat Central Asia is playing an active role by recruiting doctors who could be involved in this plan.

The overall goal of Salamat's involvement in the medical system is the improvement of the quality of service administered, and the modernization of an aging program. In turn, these improvements will lead to a longer life expectancy and a better quality of life for the peoples of Kazakhstan. The staff of Salamat believes that the tide has turned here because of the new administration's desire to bring about change and a desire to cooperate with international organizations.
